Yoga means so much to me for so many reasons.
When I make it to the yoga studio, I feel wonderful. I know that I’m carving out special time. I know that I’m going to breathe mindfully, pose gracefully, and feel amazing afterward. It’s also really nice to know that I’m surrounded by others seeking the same state of calm. It feels nice to know that I’m not alone in my search for peace. Sharing that vibe in community is icing on the cake.
Over the years, I’ve also found a few items that help to make my experience a little bit better. I don’t need to spend a ton of money to feel prepared for yoga with all the essentials. Have a look below to learn which gear I like best: it’s the stuff that lasts and leaves me feeling totally at peace, on and off the mat.
yoga mat
My mat is probably the only thing that I make sure to purchase mindfully. I had a Jade Mat for about 10 years and it lasted pretty well. I did not use it for hot yoga. With sweat and the way the mat absorbs moisture, I mostly used it for traditional Vinyasa Flow. Jade Mats start to break down, eventually. Most things do. Now, I have a Cork Mat and a Manduka Mat. The deals on Manduka mats can be really impressive if you’re trying one out for the first time. Amazon does a decent job and I’ve even found them at Sierra from time to time. Whichever mat you choose, test it out first if you can. Then, I suggest putting most of your money here, since it’s the most frequently used piece of equipment.
Yoga pants
Everyone has something to say about yoga pants. I’ll jump up and admit that I haven’t spent the money on LuluLemon or ALO. Am I even a yoga practitioner or teacher if I don’t wear Lululemon leggings?!!? The answer is “yes.” Instead, I’ve shopped for savings. I like Carrie Underwood’s brand, Calia, which can be found online or at Dicks Sporting Goods. The designs are fun and unique. Plus, the fit is really nice. I also like Athleta and Under Armour. But if we’re being real, I have even heard some people swear by Old Navy. So, go figure. The thing to remember is this: shop around, try stuff on, and learn what works well on your body. We’re all different. I’m short with hardly any torso, which means my Under Armour gear is actually my favorite. The pants stay in place during the workout and they can handle my sweat appropriately. Find what you love and stick to it!
yoga mat strap
It took me forever to buy one of these. The strap is for placing around your mat so it is easier to carry. Why did I wait so long before buying one? They are cheap and easy and I love it. They come in a zillion colors and you can’t go wrong. I honestly don’t think there is a carrying strap superior to another. Plus, a decent one can be used for stretches during your yoga practice. Win, win!
yoga block
So, pretty much every yoga studio will have blocks available to you during your practice. However, I grew up with a total germaphobe (my mama) and she can’t stand the idea of sweating on something and sharing. Since she prefers a yoga bag to the yoga strap for toting around her mat, Mom throws her very own blocks into her bag, too. Blocks are such a great support for modifications that it’s not a bad idea to have your own. In my humble opinion, it’s Manduka for the win on this one. They have nice blocks that feel strong and sturdy. I like them and I think you will, too.
yoga towel
By some strange stroke of fate (maybe it’s actually not a great thing, who knows?) I am not much of a sweater. BUT, I completely love Bikram and Hot Yoga. On those days, I can really get a good sweat going and MAN, does it feel great! On the days when my practice really heats up, I need a wicking towel that will cover my extra large mat. Yoga towels are pretty inexpensive and any one will do. Gaiam is a pretty popular yoga company you can find at Target, Walmart, and the like. Their yoga towels are all I need. But if you’re a significant sweater and you want something a little tougher, I recommend the Yogitotes. If hot yoga is your thing, this might be worth the investment!
I hope these helpful hints bring you peace! Preparation and the right gear sure puts me in a great mood. Enjoy your practice, and I hope you find the peace in your day.
