My Bathroom Remodel Drove Me Crazy At the Start; But I Blame My Wintery-Mood
We’re gearing up to remodel a bathroom for our kids, and I’ve put an unreasonable amount of pressure on myself to get it just right.
Maybe it’s winter. Maybe it’s my the fact that I’m too cold to think. But I don’t want this bathroom to just function—I want it to impress people who are literally just there to wash their hands. Which is ridiculous because the bathroom will mostly be used by children who spray toothpaste for sport and fart louder than car horns on any freshly cleaned bowl without abandon.
In preparation of the demolition, I’ve gone a little nutty looking at tile. Two full weeks of full-on-tile exploration had led me to find a handful of decent selections, and a handful of shitty sales people.
Did I really write that? I’m sorry, it’s winter, and I’ve lost common decency. I mean to say the guy was slightly crappy. Nope, wrong again. I meant “less-than-ideal.” Yea, that sounds more like me.
Edit: There’s no such thing as shitty customer service people….just less than ideal scenarios, which sometimes lead people to be less helpful and kind.
That one tile guy I met wasn’t shitty, he was just not excited to talk to people about tile. As in, tile may not be his life’s calling. And that’s perfectly ok. Because I DID meet someone who’s life’s calling is helping others select tile.
Finding The Best Service Ever
Enter: Blaze.
What I’m actually jumping on here to discuss is what EXCELLENT customer service looks like….and that is exactly what I found at Eagle Tile in Chester Springs. My buddy Blaze has been in business for decades. The man knows tile, he knows customer service, he knows kindness and patience. He’s amazing.
I’ll confess that I went into that shop 3-4 times, testing new tile, borrowing samples, and swapping out tile boards before finally landing on something I liked. It was a TILE JOURNEY like I’ve never experienced before. (If you didn’t think you knew a drama queen….now you can say you do…..)
So, my tile shopping wins were (in order of importance):
- working with Blaze
- feeling grateful to work with a human person instead of asking AI to fix my tile indecisiveness
- finding tile I can live with that will likely impress no one, but will make me happy
Reflecting on Gratitude
My experience really got me on a tear thinking about how grateful I am to work with human people. Lately, I’ve been slightly paranoid about AI taking everyone’s jobs and ruling the world, and it’s over-privileged moments like tile shopping that reminds me how important people are.
So, here’s my reality check for the week, my coming home to peace, my gentle reminder of all that is good in the world:
Even in the case of non-life-threatening stuff like picking bathroom tile, human connection matters. Our shared experiences build community and permeate peace.
I’m always thankful when others show up offering nothing more than kindness.
Namaste. Every. Day.
