When I was a kid, my mother used to spend Saturday mornings (not all, but more than a handful) cleaning the house. My sister and I were asked to help and often whined and complained through beautiful mornings stuck in a toilet, scrubbing and spraying something less-than-desirable.
It was a practice meant to teach us something, and it did. The familiarity of cleaning on a Saturday morning grounds me. The way to house smells and feels after a scrub brings me peace. It’s a needed skill that I don’t dread but enjoy, thanks to the building of a practice.
I realize cleaning is not everyone’s cup of tea.
But I believe there is something to practice that settles into our hearts and takes root.
Asking my children to participate in activities they would not normally choose for themselves leads to familiarity they can access later in life.
Enter, yoga.
My kids are not huge on yoga. They prefer lots of movement, high speeds, and loud music. But I ask them to practice with me sometimes. I show them what it means to be still and breathe deeply. I show them poses that are fun and calming. I show them the tricky ones to work on.
I do this on faith….knowing that even if they don’t learn to enjoy yoga, there’s always a takeaway. They will know that Mommy has a practice to calm her mind and concentrate. They will know there are ways to reduce stress, find a deeper sense of self, and release the need to “do” and find a way to simply “be.”
I believe in this practice, so I’m thrilled to offer it to young ones this Friday, October 4th in The Studio.
We’ll learn about breathing, try a few poses, enjoy a short craft, and have a snack. I’m excited to see you and your kiddos! This practice will bring me peace, and I know it will do the same for you.
Let’s share the peace!
Namaste Every Day!
