The Unexpected Blessing

Life is full of blessings. Many spiritual teachings note that we are often too busy to notice them— but they’re everywhere. So, I’ve been on the hunt, trying to remain present and notice the incredible things in each day.

I came across a blessing this week that took me off my feet. A man approached me after class and shared some of his life stories. He spoke of love and loss. He spoke of kindness and heartache and joy. She were locked in a magic moment in which he shared, and I was blessed to bear witness to his vulnerability.

Spoiler alert: he shared some really deep stuff! Whew! I don’t know that I could be so bold!

While it would seem that the story we shared was the blessing, it wasn’t. My knee-jerk reaction is to think like a journalist, right? I’m like, “What’s the story? Where’s the action? Where’s the climax? What’s the draw, the hook, the pull?”

While the man’s story itself blew my socks off, I was more touched by the act of sharing than by the story itself.

What an incredible blessing that a person should open his heart wide and bear his soul in the middle of the day to a random girl like me. The gift of the moment was not just story, but the sharing of it.

I’ve blogged before about the simultaneous joy and thrill I’m feeling over Susan’s upcoming Memoir Workshop in January. But while our stories will inspire and be cherished, the real joy lies in giving them voice. Experiencing the words with you in a space, hearing them spoken, and holding them throughout the days ahead will be a gift greater than any other I can imagine.

Our stories unite us. Our stories make us who we are. And our stories empower our lives in profound ways that are, perhaps unexpectedly, blessings.

If you’ve considered joining our Memoir Workshop, feel free to reach out with questions! I can’t wait to share what we have in store.

Share the peace of your day! Namaste every day, my friends!
