DAY 8: Freedom (or the lack thereof)

It’s Day 8 of the 90-Day No-Buy Challenge, and—honestly?—I’m feeling great.

Well, sort of.

I haven’t completely lost my cool over not buying anything. I haven’t spent hours obsessing over something I must have but can’t have because of this challenge. That, in itself, feels like a win.

But I’ll admit—my mindset around consumerism and personal freedom is starting to shift in unexpected ways.

Is Shopping Really Freedom?

I used to think freedom meant being able to buy whatever I wanted (within reason—no Lamborghinis in this driveway). I walked around with this low-grade buzz of satisfaction: I can do what I want. And sometimes that meant treating myself to a candle, a blouse, or some little thing that caught my eye.

It felt empowering.

But now I’m wondering: Is it possible that something can feel 100% true and also 100% false at the same time?

The Trap of the “Perfect Thing”

I’ve spent plenty of time browsing online and in stores, searching for the perfect summer sandals, the perfect blouse, the perfect wallpaper. But that pursuit of perfection—however small—has become a trap of its own.

How much time have I spent shopping when I could’ve been reading an incredible novel? Or meditating at the end of a long day? (Okay, full transparency: I never meditate at night. It’s a morning-or-bust thing for me.)

And time isn’t the only freedom I’ve sacrificed.

The Illusion of Control

For a long time, I equated success with the ability to say, I can buy anything I want. But that narrative was driven by my ego. (Hi Ego! I see you there, still hiding in those yoga pants I “had to have” last spring.)

Real freedom is so much more than swiping a credit card and knowing you can afford to do it.

Freedom is choosing how you spend your day—and following through.
Freedom is knowing yourself well enough to understand what you actually need.
Sometimes that’s rest. Other times it’s connection, creativity, nourishing food, or simply solitude.

And here’s the kicker:
When I’m deeply in tune with what I need, shopping never shows up on that list.
