I never mentioned what happened last weekend regarding the donuts.
I love a good donut. Don’t you? I’m not talking about Krispy Kreme or Dunkin, although they serve a great purpose in the community, and we purchase from them often for various school and sports events.
only buy the best
I’m talking about a delicious homemade donut with real icing and a soft, doughy inside. Pair with that a great cup of coffee and I’m SOLD. Around here, my favorite cup of coffee comes from The Farmhouse Coffee and Espresso Bar. (The Life’s Patina is fabulous, too!) At The Farmhouse, the beans are so fantastic and the cups of coffee are simply divine. I feel like some kind of authority on this, given that, Soy Colombiana.
Anyhoo, I haven’t been to The Farmhouse since my challenge started. I decided that even a cup of coffee is off the table for these 90 days. My only exception to this self-imposed rules has been for work meetings, in which case buy coffee for myself and a colleague, which is a work expense.

a mother’s day treat
This weekend, The Farmhouse offered $1 donuts in celebration of Mother’s Day, so our little family of 5 ventured into Downingtown for the treat. Our daughter even brought her wallet and offered to buy one of the donuts. Hubs picked up the rest of the tab as a gift, including one small, simple cup of coffee— no frilly latte or extras.
I think the bill for the 5 of us came to $6.59 or something like that.
Our two youngest kids took the cash from Hubs, ordered the donuts themselves, exchanged pleasantries with the cashier cash, and brought the treats to the table.
I was so proud of the kids. I watched them behave like grown ups, taking care of everything and speaking loudly and clearly with the cashier. They remembered to account for the tax!
There was even some confusion about which donuts were the $1 donuts and which were specialty donuts, which they inquired about and resolved on their own.
what i noticed
While I was struck by the fun of the moment (how our babies are growing up so darn fast and life couldn’t be sweeter with this little crew) my mind also wandered back to the cost of things. And to this 90-Day Challenge.
I pick up a latte on my own all the time for $6 or more without blinking. But this Sunday, we made a different choice and shared an experience for around the same cost. I can’t help but think about all the times I’ve gone out on my own and spent our family’s hard earned money on myself without feeling nearly as wonderful as I did this past weekend.
It’s important to note that I don’t think there’s anything wrong with buying myself a cup of coffee. There’s nothing wrong with the action. There’s nothing wrong with the cost. And there’s nothing wrong with spending money on myself.
But I do want to spend time doing things that feel really really good.
All. The. Time.
noticing what feels good
Maybe those solo lattes don’t feel as good as they used to. Or, maybe there are simply other things that make me feel better. Maybe the lattes will feel good again when all of this is over. But for now, I’m rethinking everything– including the small stuff. When we set intentions and build in awareness, change can follow. So, maybe my life will really change.
