Day 33: Porch Chats With Jenna

Today my sweet friend, Jenna came over for a chat. We’ve checked in throughout these 33 days, but we wanted time to discuss our findings from this challenge at length.

The major takeaway after 1 month’s time?

This experience is about so much more than spending money and buying stuff.

  • I’m seeing my habits, the behavioral patterns I repeat mindlessly, both good and bad.
  • I’m learning about how I spend my time and money.
  • I’m learning about my real life’s values.

“What you buy” is feeling a lot like that phrase, “You are what you eat.” My purchases are consumable items. And at some point or another, they can consume me if I’m not monitoring it.

When I’ve looked over our expenses before, there has never been a “problem.” There is a mortgage on our home, which is paid monthly, and we use credit cards, which get paid off regularly as well. We don’t have student loans. We don’t have credit card debt. We don’t have car payments.

But I’ve been spending freely on things that don’t define who I am or who I want to be. I never thought so hard about this before. I never put so much emphasis or energy into “what I buy.” But now, I’m thinking differently. What if, even after my 90 days, I wasn’t a heavy consumer anymore?

What would that feel like in my body? How would that make my soul feel?

Tomorrow marks the end of the month, and I’ll have a real number to share, in terms of my credit card bill. I’ll be able to look at a real number on paper and see exactly what a normal month without non-essential spending looks like.

I’m pretty excited to reveal this.

I told Jenna my number, and her eyes popped a little. Our porch chat today was so special because it’s always nice to do hard things in community. It’s nice to say, “This is hard, but I’m still doing it,” to someone else who is doing it, too.

That’s why we’ve decided to open the studio for an opportunity to share.

We’ll bring together ladies interested in a clothing swap. We’ll also welcome anyone interested in sharing about their No-Buy-Experience. This event will be free, with an opportunity to enjoy coffee and treats.

Stay tuned for more details! Follow the blog, follow Instagram stories, and spread the word! As always, namaste every day.
